Appliance products integrate microcontrollers, displays, WiFi and Ethernet connectivity.  The type and function of an appliance mandate the requirements for displays, indicator lamps and application circuitry.  Power management solutions are needed for Display backlight and bias, LED indicator lamp control and well and power switching and voltage regulation.

+ LCD Bias Supplies  

 

LCD panels require positive/negative bias supply voltages that must be stepped up and inverted from the appliance control voltage source.

+ LCD Backlight LED Drivers  

 

Appliance LCD display panels use white LED backlight drivers to boost input voltage supply rails to the levels needed to drive a backlight LED string along with providing a means of LED brightness control by the system microcontroller.

 

  • White LED (WLED) backlight driver solutions range from simple linear LED brightness control to sophisticated high efficiency WLED array drivers to cover most LCD panel sizes available today.

+ Power Interface  

 

Appliance controllers and displays are AC/DC line powered, AC/DC adaptor powered or in some cases battery powered.  Input DC power ports that are subject to voltage surge conditions that can potentially damage the device.  Appliances voltage rail switching is used to reduce standby power consumption or to enable/disable specific function circuits while the device is operating. Input power port protection is desirable to guard against unreliable power sources. 

 

Over-voltage, transient and voltage surge protected load switches protect appliance control circuits in the event the device is connected to a faulty power source.

 

  • Switches provide programmable over voltage protection (OVP) shutdown thresholds, Source surge voltage, transient voltage and ESD protection.
  • Power interface switches can provide shutdown reverse or bi-directional current blocking to prevent damage to the system or circuits should a short occur at the external power port.

 

Integrated load switches provide internal power switching and are directly controlled by microcontroller logic.

 

  • Integrated load switches provide simplified power switching directly from microcontroller I/O to eliminate the need for bias and level shift circuits associated with discrete MOSFET switches.
  • Load switches also provide slew rate limited turn on and shutdown mode reverse current blocking.

+ RGB LED Drivers  

 

Appliance controllers use multicolor RGB LEDs for function indicator lamps.  Indicator lamps show power or system status on devices that use LCD displays.  For without without LCD displays, indicator lamps are needed to show power and status for all functions.

 

  • RGB LED drivers allow programed control of LED color and brightness in an ultra small footprint package device. 
  • Kinetic Technologies’ devices feature a wide range of ramp up/down timing for slow fade in/out effects and complex repeating patterns.
  • 3-channel RGB LED drivers permit customer color control
  • 4-channel RGBW devices allow for driving a white LED in addition to the RGB LED.

+ Voltage Regulation  

 

Appliances and their control boards use AC/DC supplies or battery power and do not always provide specific voltage rails needed by application circuits. Voltage regulators allow the available voltage supply to be stepped up or down and regulated at the point of load for specific application circuits.

 

  • For light load current requirements, a dual output linear regulator provides a compact low cost voltage regulation solution. 
  • When high power conversion efficiency is desired, a DC/DC switching regulator can be a better choice.  DC/DC switching regulators are available for voltage step-up and step-down applications.

+ EMI/ESD Protection  

 

The AS1602 is an integrated ESD and Common Mode EMI suppression IC used to improve EMC performance in Ethernet applications.  It is built around Kinetic Technologies’ patented and proprietary Active EMC suppression technology to enable "Design for Compliance" approach to system design right from the start.  This product helps eliminate EMC compliance challenges by providing consistent EMC performance and improvements utilizing silicon based technology as opposed to passive technologies.  The AS1602 enables system designers to comply with:

 

  • CISPR22 and FCC Part 15, Class B requirements for Radiated and Conducted Emissions.
  • IEC 61000-4-3/6 requirements for Radiated and Conducted Immunity, Level 3 or higher.
