Point of Sale (POS) terminals in wide use today have an array of power management requirements from display backlighting, function indicator lamps, power port protection, load switching and voltage regulation. These products typically operate from line driven AC/DC adaptor supplies with voltage rails that need power distribution control and regulation at the point of load.
+ PoE PD Controllers
Applications requiring PoE typically need high efficiency power conversion, small PCB area and reduced component count. Kinetic Technologies offers a broad portfolio of product solutions which integrate the PD physical interface and DC/DC controller functions into a single package. Supporting solutions from a few watts up to the maximum allowed, Kinetic Technologies provides high efficiency power solutions for nearly every PoE PD application.
- The AS11xx family of parts support single output isolated or non-isolated solutions for IEEE802.3af (Type 1) and IEEE802.3at (Type 1 and Type 2) PDs or higher power levels using custom programmed PSEs or by implementing the LLDP to enable 4-pair power delivery on the Ethernet cable.
- The AS18xx family of parts support single and multi-output isolated solutions for IEEE802.3af (Type 1) and IEEE802.3at (Type 1 and Type 2) PDs or higher power levels using custom programmed PSEs or by implementing 4-pair power delivery. The AS18xx family, in addition to integrating the PD physical interface and DC/DC controller functions, adds synchronous rectifier control and integrated digital signal isolation thereby eliminating the need for opto-couplers. The multi-output versions support up to three additional outputs, each of which may be individually sequenced. All products include input and output over-current protection, output over-voltage protection, and over-temperature protection.
- The AS18xx family has full command/control and monitoring capability available through the integrated I2C bus, which allows management of the power processing functions such as on/off control, voltage margining, sequencing of outputs, fault and alarm monitoring, and even input voltage and current.

+ EMI/ESD Suppression
The AS1602 is an integrated ESD and Common Mode EMI suppression IC used to improve EMC performance in Ethernet applications. It is built around Kinetic Technologies’ patented and proprietary Active EMC suppression technology to enable "Design for Compliance" approach to system design right from the start. This product helps eliminate EMC compliance challenges by providing consistent EMC performance and improvements utilizing silicon based technology as opposed to passive technologies. The AS1602 enables system designers to comply with:
- CISPR22 and FCC Part 15, Class B requirements for Radiated and Conducted Emissions.
- IEC 61000-4-3/6 requirements for Radiated and Conducted Immunity, Level 3 or higher.
- IEC 61000-4-2 ESD (Air Discharge) of ±25kV.
- IEC 61000-4-2 ESD (Contact Discharge) of ±12kV.
- Cable Discharge Event (CDE) of ±12kV.

POS terminals use multicolor RGB LEDs for function indicator lamps. Indicator lamps show power on or function status. Implementing indicator lamp LED control circuits to interface LED control switching to microcontroller logic is tedious for designs and requires multiple discrete components.

+ Over-Voltage and Surge Protection
POS terminals have input power ports that are subject to voltage surge conditions that can potentially damage the device. POS terminal also need internal voltage rail switching to reduce standby power consumption or to enable/disable specific function circuits while the device is operating. Input power port protection is desirable to guard against unreliable power sources.
Over-voltage, transient and voltage surge protected load switches protect POS terminal circuits in the event the device is connected to a faulty power source.
- Programmable over voltage protection (OVP) shutdown thresholds.
- Source voltage protection to 100V.
- Transient voltage protection compliant to IEC61000-4-2 (Level 4).
- ESD protection compliant to ±8kV contact, ±15kV air gap and ±2kV human body model.
- Power interface switches can provide shutdown reverse or bi-directional current blocking to prevent damage to the system or circuits should a short occur at the external power port.
Integrated load switches provide internal power switching and are directly controlled by microcontroller logic.
- Integrated load switches provide simplified microcontroller I/O controlled power switching to eliminate the need for bias and level shift circuits associated with discrete MOSFET switches.
- Load switches also provide slew rate limited turn on and shutdown mode reverse current blocking.

+ Buck and Boost Converters
POS terminal AC/DC power adaptor supplies do not always provide specific voltage rails needed by application circuits. Voltage Regulators allow the adaptor supplied voltage rail to be stepped up or down at the point of load for specific application circuits.
- For light load current requirements, a dual output linear regulator provides a compact low cost voltage regulation solution.
- When high power conversion efficiency is desired, a DC/DC switching regulator can be a better choice. DC/DC switching regulators are available for voltage step-up and step-down applications.
