Navigation products include GPS receivers and personal navigation devices.  These products are portable and battery powered which requires attention to efficient power management solutions.  Kinetic Technologies addresses solutions for display LED backlighting, display panel bias, RGB LED drivers, power interface protection and voltage regulation.

 

+ LCD Bias Supplies  

 

LCD panels used in video or digital still camera applications need a positive/negative bias supply that is stepped up and invert from the internal Li-Ion/Polymer battery source. 

 

  • Actual LCD display panel bias level requirements are a function to the panel size. 
  • LCD bias supply drivers support 2-channel output regulation while only requiring a single inductor for high power conversion efficiency and minimized solution size.  
  • Advanced programmable LCD bias drivers provide user adjustable boost headroom options so maximize efficiency to specific application conditions.
  • System battery consumption is farther reduced during shutdown states by minimizing unnecessary leakage current by the I2C bus when the LCD is turned off.

Personal navigation device LCD displays need backlight power management solutions with high power conversion efficiency and flexible control schemes maximize battery life between charge cycles. 

 

  • White LED (WLED) backlight driver solutions range from low cost linear LED brightness controllers to sophisticated high efficiency WLED array drivers to cover most LCD panel applications. 
  • Good LED current accuracy is achieved through brightness control with tight linearity characteristics over wide range of dimming inputs and supply voltages.
  • High voltage boost power conversion efficiency minimizes demands on battery power consumption.

+ Power Interface  

 

Battery powered personal navigation device and GPS receiver products require an external interface for power and charging.  The rechargeable Li-Ion/polymer batteries are charged at high current levels and require a stable power source. 

 

  • External power ports need internal load circuit switching and protection for operation and battery charging. 
  • Input power port protection is a paramount design concern, as reliable power sources may not always be used. 
  • Over voltage, transient voltage and voltage surge protected load switches protect battery charge management and operating handset circuit in the event the device is connected to a faulty power source.
  • Load switches have programmable over voltage (OVP) shutdown thresholds and source surge voltage protection. 
  • Devices may also provide shutdown reverse current blocking to prevent damage to the internal battery should a short circuit occur at the external power port. 

 

Internal personal navigation devices and GPS receiver application circuits often need voltage rail on/off control to reduce standby or shutdown state power consumption. 

 

  • Integrated load switches provide direct processor logic controlled power switching to eliminate the need for bias, and level shift circuits associated with discrete MOSFET switches.
  • Load switches can also provide slew rate limited turn on and shutdown mode reverse current blocking functions.

+ RGB LED Drivers  

 

Personal navigation devices use single color and multicolor RGB LEDs as function indicator lamps.  Dedicated GPS receiver modules that do not have an LCD display use indicator lamps to signal power up and GPS signal capture or other operating functions.

 

  • Multicolor RGB LEDs are often used for all of these stated purposes.
  • RGB LED drivers provide programmable control of LED color and brightness in an ultra small footprint package.
  • 3-channel RGB LED drivers permit custom color and brightness control
  • 4-channel RGBW devices allow for driving a white LED in addition to the RGB LED.
  • Programming interface options include Express Wire or I2C to ease integration with a wide variety of processors and operating systems.

+ Voltage Regulation  

 

Personal navigation devices typically operate using highly integrated system power management IC’s. 

 

  • In cases point of load regulation is needed application circuits located a distance from the PMIC or in cases where a needed voltage rail is unavailable, a voltage regulators can solve the issue.
  • GPS receiver modules may not use a PMIC as they are simplified function devices, but still require regulated voltage supplies from the variable voltage battery source. 
  • For high efficiency single output supply voltage requirements, a DC/DC switching step-up or step-down regulators can provide the needed application solution.
