Peripherals

 

Peripheral products cover a wide range of products from USB port powered products to stand-alone battery powered wireless devices.  All of these devices share a few common design requirements.  They interface to USB ports or external power sources for operation or battery charging and need power port protection.  External power sources and battery power often are not at a voltage level needed to power system or application circuit, thus point of load voltage regulation my be needed.  Products often do not have LCD displays are relay on LGB LED indicator lamps to inform the user to status of device operation.  To accomplish these tasks, Kinetic Technologies offer an assortment of power interface switches, RGB LED drivers and voltage regulators suited for peripheral product designs. 

 

+ Power Interface  

 

Peripheral products powered by USB ports, external power supplies such as AC to DC power adaptors or automotive DC power outlets require power port switching and protection.  Devices that are battery powered also connect to the same array of power sources for charging. Power for peripheral products may not always be supplied from stable to trusted sources.  These devices need input over-voltage, transient voltage and electro-static discharge (ESD) protection for product reliability.

 

  • Over voltage, transient voltage and voltage surge protected load switches protect battery charge management and operating peripheral product circuit in the event the device is connected to a faulty power source. 
  • Load switches have programmable over voltage protection (OVP) shutdown thresholds
  • Source surge voltage protection to 100V, transient and ESD voltage protection.
  • Devices can also provide shutdown reverse current blocking to prevent damage to the internal battery should a short circuit occur at the external power port.

 

Peripheral product internal circuit functions often require system controlled power rail switching to control devices functions or to reduce standby or shutdown state power consumption.

 

  • Integrated load switches provide internal power switching
  • Directly controlled by simple GPIO logic eliminates the need for bias and level shift circuits associated with discrete MOSFET switches
  • Load switches also provide additional features such as slew rate limited turn on and shutdown mode reverse current blocking to aid in circuit design.

+ RGB LED Drivers  

 

Peripheral products by nature are compact and often simple or single function accessory devices which may not have LCD displays.  To inform the user to power, function or battery status, RGB LEDs or multiple LEDs are used as indicator lamps.

 

  • RGB and single color LED drivers provide for simplified control of LED color and brightness in an ultra small footprint packages.
  • 3-channel RGB LED drivers permit custom color and brightness control
  • 4-channel RGBW devices allow for driving a single color or white LED in addition to the RGB LED
  • Programming interface options include Express Wire or I2C to ease integration with a wide variety of processors and operating systems

+ Voltage Regulation  

 

Peripheral products are often simple low cost accessory devices that may not use sophisticated system power management IC’s yet still require regulated voltage levels for application circuits.  For instances where a PMIC is used, but a specific voltage level is unavailable, a discrete regulator can provide a solution at the point of load.

 

  • Single output DC/DC switching voltage step-up and step-down switching regulators provide necessary systems voltage rails with high power conversion efficiency.   
  • Light load current applications or applications where power conversion efficiency is a lower priority, a dual output linear regulator and provide a good low cost voltage regulation solution.
