Tablet, e-Readers:

 

Tablets and E-Readers are portable battery operated platforms having diverse power conversion requirements due to multiple features and function that operate simultaneously along with large LCD display backlight power concerns.  Since these devices are primarily battery powered, good power conversion efficiency is necessary to extend operating times between charging cycles.  As with all portable products, internal circuit board component density and height requirement force the smallest total solution sizes for power management devices.  Kinetic Technologies offers solutions to meet tablet and e-reader needs for lighting and display, camera flash, power interface protection and DC/DC power conversion.

 

+ Camera LED Flash Drivers  

Many Tablets today incorporate digital camera modules for still phone and video recording features.

 

  • Camera lighting flash LED applications have a wide range of requirements that are determined by camera resolution quality and functions.
  • Low cost cameras may only require a single flash LED with simplified driver requirements.

+ LCD Backlight LED Drivers  

 

Tablet and e-reader devices have large displays that consume the most significant portion of the device battery power budget.  Display backing power management solutions must provide high power conversion efficiency with flexible dimming control to maximize battery life between charge cycles. 

 

    • White LED (WLED) backlight driver requirements are driven by display size and desired backlight control feature set.
    • WLED brightness control current sinks have tight linearity characteristics for high accuracy LED current over a wide range of dimming levels and input supply.
    • Multiple series/parallel WLED strings require DC-DC boosted voltage supplies, which must have high power conversion efficiency to maximize battery life.
  • WLED drivers offer external control and programming options from PWM signal to full featured I2C interfaces to fit a wide range of product display sizes, feature requirements and processor capabilities.

+ Power Interface  

 

Tablet and e-reader battery powered products require and external interface for power and charging.  These devices utilize large capacity Li-Ion batteries, which are charged at significantly high charging current level and require a stable power source. 

 

  • External power ports need internal load circuit switching and protection for operation and battery charging. 
  • Input power port protection is a paramount design concern, as reliable power sources may not always be used.
  • Over voltage, transient voltage and voltage surge protected load switches protect battery charge management and operating handset circuit in the event the device is connected to a faulty power source. 
  • Programmable over voltage protection (OVP) shutdown thresholds.
  • Source supply voltage surge protection to 100V
    Transient voltage protection compliant to IEC61000-4-2 (Level 4)
  • ESD protection to ±8kV contact, ±15kV air gap and ±2kV  human body model.
  • Some devices provide shutdown mode reverse current blocking to prevent damage to the internal battery should a short circuit occur at the external power port.

Internal tablet application circuits often need power rail on/off control to reduce standby or shutdown state power consumption.  

 

  • Integrated load switches provide internal power switching and are controlled by simple GPIO logic.
  • Eliminate the need for bias, and level shift circuits associated with discrete MOSFET switches.
  • Provide slew rate limited turn on and shutdown mode reverse current blocking to aid in design and control of peripheral circuits.

+ RGB LED Drivers  

 

Tablet and e-reader devices often use multicolor RGB LEDs as function indicator lamps or fashion lighting features.  RGB LED drivers allow for simplified programmable control of LED color and brightness in an ultra small footprint package.

+ Voltage Regulation  

 

Tablet and e-reader products typically operate using highly integrated system power management IC’s.  In some cases point of load application circuits such as camera modules or Wi-Fi/Bluetooth transceiver modules are located a distance away from the centralized PMIC and need local regulation.  In other cases a specific voltage rail may be unavailable. 

 

  • Voltage regulators can supply a local voltage rail with high efficiency at the point of load.
