Wearables and Fitness

 

Battery powered wearables and fitness devices are typically very compact in size and have limited battery capacities.  These devices must use high efficiency power conversion to maximize user time between charging cycles.  For products with input power ports to connect battery charging devices, internal load circuit switching and power port protection are required. 

 

+ Power Interface  

 

Input power port protection is always a product design concern, as reliable power sources may not always be used for product operation or battery charging. Over voltage, transient and voltage surge protected load switches protect battery charge management and operating circuits in the event the device is connected to a faulty power source.

 

  • Programmable over-voltage protected (OVP) shutdown thresholds.
  • Source voltage surge protection to 100V.
  • Transient voltage protection compliant to IEC61000-4-2 (Level 4).
  • ESD protection to ±8kV contact, ±15kV air gap and ±2kV human body model.
  • Shutdown mode reverse current blocking prevents damage to the internal battery should a short circuit occur at the external power port.

 

The compact nature of wearable and fitness devices do not allow for discrete circuit components and excess passive devices. Integrated load switches provide internal power switching option.

 

  • Direct GPIO logic interface eliminates the need for bias and level shift circuits associated with discrete MOSFET switches.
  • Load switches also provide slew rate limited turn on and shutdown reverse current blocking

+ RGB LED Drivers  

 

 

Wearables often use multicolor RGB LEDs as function indicator lamps, fashion lighting features or color backlighting.  RGB LED drivers allow for simplified programmable control of LED color and brightness in an ultra small footprint package.

 

  • Kinetic Technologies’ devices feature a wide range of ramp up/down timing for slow fade in/out effects and complex repeating patterns.
  • 3-channel RGB LED drivers permit custom color and brightness control
  • 4-channel RGBW devices allow for driving a white LED in addition to the RGB LED.

+ Voltage Regulation  

 

Wearable and fitness devices operate from small limited capacity battery cells with voltage level that vary based on their state of charge. 

 

  • Most application circuits within a wearable device operate at a voltage level lower than that supplied by the battery.  
  • To conserve power and maximize battery operation between charging, small high efficiency DC-DC voltage step down converters are recommended to supply a required regulated voltage rails.
  • High efficiency DC-DC switching step-down regulator can provide the needed application solution.
